Like all parents, Susan and Thomas wanted the best education for their children. After moving to Hawaii from the mainland, Susan and her family came together and discussed several school options before Maryknoll School was selected as the best choice.
Susan herself went to Catholic school growing up, and she recognized Maryknoll as the best path to getting that same quality education. “I really wanted my children to not only have academic opportunities, but to have the creative and cultural opportunities that Maryknoll provides,” she says.
Her son Tom has taken a fond interest in history. The wide range of classes he has been able to take have opened up a window of opportunities for growth. Where he used to, as he puts it, “have a very black-and-white idea” of what he wanted to do, now the 17-year-old is always thinking about how history relates to the world today. “If we can look at how things were solved in the past, we can make improvements now. I think that’s why history is the biggest interest of mine right now,” he says.
And while Susan’s daughter Natalie also loves history, she immensely enjoys drama. She sees her future with big bright lights, saying “Being an actor, I am really inspired by Sutton Foster. She played Fiona in Shrek The Musical on Broadway and I hope to one day be on Broadway like her.”
Susan knows that creativity is just as important to teach and nurture as any other skillset, and is thankful for the knowledgeable and passionate staff for recognizing that same value. “I feel that if a person can use their creativity as well as their academic abilities, then they’re going to be a better person all around,” she says. “They’re going to have more to offer to the world.”
